Plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendonitis are two chronic pain conditions of the foot. A chronic pain condition of the foot can be debilitating, as it inhibits the ability to stand, walk, and move about.

What Is Achilles Plantar fasciitis ?

Planter fasciitis refers to the inflammation of the arch tendon (plantar fascia) of the foot. It's an injury that derives from overuse and can cause heel pain that travels throughout the foot. While plantar fasciitis is commonly known as heel spur, they're not exactly the same.

This foot pain condition is most commonly found in men age 40-70 and is the leading cause of orthopedic care for the feet. While heel spurs - calcium deposits - are commonly found in plantar fasciitis patients, they are not the cause of the pain. They are a reaction by the bone to the fascia's inflammation.

What Is Achilles Tendonitis?

Achilles tendonitis is a condition caused by injury to the Achilles tendon. Multiple sources indicate that approximately 11% of all running injuries are later diagnosed as Achilles tendonitis. Achilles tendonitis is brought about by the repetitive motion required of runners and joggers. The biggest complication of Achilles tendon injuries is that they are slow to heal due to the low blood supply to the area.
 

Shockwave therapy is a new non-invasive solution for musculoskeletal pain. The extracorporeal shockwave therapy is frequently used in physiotherapy, orthopaedics and sports medicine. Applications are mostly associated with treatment of chronic muscular and tendon disorders, back and cervical pain. Most common indications include: painful shoulder, epicondylitis, low back pain, Achilles tendon pain, patellar tendonitis and trigger points.
 

Shock wave is one of the few medical technologies that performs best on people with chronic conditions that did not respond to conservative traditional therapy, when compare to laser therapy, ultrasonic therapy or even ozone therapy. Shock wave accelerates the body's own healing process as a purely physical treatment method: Through a process called cavitation, shock wave stimulates fibroblast and tenocyte production of human body. Fibroblast or tenocyte cells make up human bodies' connective tissues, such as tendons and the fascia. Shock wave diminishes pain by over-stimulating the nerves that send pain sensations to the brain. The procedure can break down pathological calcification deposits (well known as a spur on feet). Shock wave is targeted at the condition that caused the spur, not the spur itself, so it can treat the chronic pain thoroughly.

What does shockwave therapy treatment feel like?

As the shockwave therapy machine is used and the probe is moved around the heel there is an awareness of pressure and vibration around the affected area. The Podiatrist will commence treatment with the machine set to the lowest amount of pressure and will gradually increase this pressure as the heel becomes de-sensitised. The Podiatrist will drop the pressure down or cease the treatment immediately if the patient feels too much discomfort.

Within a minute or two, any painful areas become much more comfortable and the treatment is easily tolerated. After the treatment is finished there is a feeling of relief and patients will usually walk around the treatment room pain free. The pain relief from Plantar Fasciitis and Achilles Tendonitis lasts for approximately 5 days, after which point the increase in blood flow slows down. The foot is then ready for another treatment.

How many treatments of shockwave therapy do I need?

Most patients who are being treated for Plantar Fasciits or Achilles Tendonitis / Tendinosis with shockwave therapy will usually have between 3 and 6 sessions. However, having one treatment only still helps due to the increase in blood flow.

How long does the shockwave therapy treatment take?

A standard treatment will last for approximately 4 minutes, during which approximately 2000 waves are applied to the affected area. If there is more than one area of pain, as in patients with Plantar Fasciits in both feet, the shockwave therapy will be applied twice, and the treatment will take closer to 10 minutes in total (4000 sound waves).

What are the side effects of shockwave therapy?

There are virtually no side effects reported from patients receiving shockwave therapy for Plantar Fasciitis. Very rarely there will be mild tingling, aching or some throbbing but these symptoms are very modest and short-lived
