How it Works:
Targeting Melanin: The diode laser emits a specific wavelength of light (typically around 800-810 nm or 1064 nm). This wavelength is preferentially absorbed by melanin, the pigment that gives hair and skin its color.
Selective Photothermolysis: The absorbed light energy converts to heat energy within the hair shaft and the melanin-rich hair bulb (the follicle's growth center).
Thermal Destruction: This intense heat (around 70°C) damages the hair follicle structure, particularly the stem cells and blood supply (the papilla) responsible for regeneration.
Growth Inhibition: Damaged follicles can no longer produce new hair or enter a prolonged dormant state, leading to significant, long-lasting hair reduction.
The Treatment Process:
Consultation: Assessment of skin type, hair color/coarseness, medical history, and setting realistic expectations. Patch test often done.
Preparation: Shaving the treatment area 24-48 hours prior is crucial (removes hair above skin, leaving the target below). Avoid sun exposure/tanning for weeks before and after. No plucking/waxing for weeks before.
During Treatment:
Patient wears protective eyewear.
Cooling gel may be applied, or the laser handpiece has an integrated cooling tip.
The technician places the handpiece on the skin and fires the laser. The sensation is often described as a quick, hot snap or rubber band flick. Cooling minimizes discomfort.
The handpiece is moved systematically across the treatment area.
Aftercare: Skin may be red and slightly swollen (like mild sunburn) for a few hours to a couple of days. Sun avoidance and sunscreen are critical. Avoid heat (hot showers, saunas, intense exercise) for 24-48 hours.
Number of Sessions: Typically 6-10 sessions spaced 4-8 weeks apart are needed. Hair grows in cycles, and the laser only effectively targets follicles in the active growth phase (anagen).
