Various usages of shock wave therapy machine

From the day that shock wave machine was invented, it has been adopted for various indications, surgical or non-surgical. In recent years, shock wave machine has been more popular in physical therapy domains, as well as rehabilitation therapy, sports injury therapy and even for veterinary usages. The most popular indications for shock wave are: Plantar Fasciitis, Achilles Tendonitis, Shoulder Tendonitis, Tennis Elbow. By flexible settings and dosages, it brings benefit to clients quickly, with comfortable treatment and long-term result.

Shock wave is one of the few medical technologies that performs best on people with chronic conditions that did not respond to conservative traditional therapy, when compare to laser therapy, ultrasonic therapy or even ozone therapy. Shock wave accelerates the body's own healing process as a purely physical treatment method: Through a process called cavitation, shock wave stimulates fibroblast and tenocyte production of human body. Fibroblast or tenocyte cells make up human bodies' connective tissues, such as tendons and the fascia. Shock wave diminishes pain by over-stimulating the nerves that send pain sensations to the brain. The procedure can break down pathological calcification deposits (well known as a spur on feet). Shock wave is targeted at the condition that caused the spur, not the spur itself, so it can treat the chronic pain thoroughly.

Shock Wave Therapy for Tendonitis and Plantar Fasciitis

Extracorporeal shock wave therapy, or ESWT, has emerged as a possible treatment option for patients with chronic tendon problems. ESWT delivers focused shock waves to the body and has been used for the treatment of a variety of conditions including:

  • Chronic heel Pain relief
  • Lateral Epicondylitis
  • Tendonosis
  • Achilles Tendonitis
  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Tennis Elbow

There is both a high-energy and low-energy form of shock wave treatment, and both forms of therapy can be used in the treatment of these conditions.

Low-energy shock wave treatments are given as a series of three or more treatments. The low-energy shock waves are not painful, or mildly painful. On the other hand, the high-energy shock wave treatments are given at one session. High-energy shock wave treatments are quite painful, and often some type of anesthesia is needed. Either a regional block or general anesthesia can be administered for the high-energy treatments.

Shock wave therapy is thought to work by inducing microtrauma to the tissue that is affected by these problems. This microtrauma initiates a healing response by the body. The healing response causes blood vessel formation and increased delivery of nutrients to the affected area. The microtrauma is thought to stimulate a repair process and relieve the symptoms of pain.

What is the Procedure Like?

Using a specially-designed hand piece, EWST works by focusing shockwaves directly at the painful part of your foot. The shockwaves produce micro traumas to the tissue that's causing your plantar fasciitis.

Your body reacts to these micro traumas by signaling for an increased blood supply to the painful area, as well as breaking down injured tissue and calcifications. In turn, blood vessel formation is increased and nutrients flood the area. Your body then heals itself.

This in-office, 15-minute procedure, is typically performed with almost no pain and no anesthesia. Normally, patients receive three shockwave treatments over as many weeks.  Low-intensity EWST always takes place in the office, requires no anesthesia and consists of three treatments. Since it is less intense as high intensity, it allows for a more comfortable lifestyle while healing.

In some cases, high-intensity shockwave therapy may be the best treatment option. Since this can cause more discomfort during the procedure, it may require monitored anesthesia. The good news is it usually requires just one treatment.

How long will shockwave therapy take to work?

Generally most applications of shockwave for plantar fasciitis and heel pain and most conditions will resolve within 3-4 sessions of 30 minutes (roughly).  This obviously can depend on the exact presentation of the condition.

Shockwave therapy is a safe and effective form of treatment in the management of plantar fasciitis.  The results of which are comparable to surgery but without the necessary recovery period, morbidity and reduced participation in sport that can often accompany surgery.
